Forms And Conventions :

What category, or genre, of text is it? How can you identify this?

'Valentine's Day' is a romantic comedy. We can identify this because Valentine's day, the 14th of February, is a day to share with the one you love. So when a film is called a day which is well known, we can assume that it will be based upon this day. We can identify that it is a romantic film due to the theme of love and how every situation involved in this film is based around a relationship. We can identify it's a comedy as we laugh at moments that occur. Further more, the film is described as, "HILARIOUS, CHARMING AND IRRESISTABLE!", by a critic. This is how we know, and can identify with the fact that this film is a romantic comedy.

What can we learn from this text from its opening minutes or front cover?

From the front cover we can tell that the film is going to have an amazing cast, and it will be themed around love. We can tell this because centered on the front of the DVD cover is a large love heart, and all of the main actors faces are on the inside of the love heart. "Valentine's Day" is in bold pink writing which symbolises love.
In the first few opening minutes of the film we know the film is going to be light hearted, playful and funny. We know this because there's fast paced music and a typical L.A feel to the atmosphere.
